With the arrival of warm weather families are spending lots more time outdoors … with lots of other living things. Visitors to the Long Island Children’s Museum are invited to take part in “Bug Bonanza,” an annual program exploring the amazing lives and natural history of insects, spiders and other creepy crawlers! Entomologists from Arrow Exterminating will be on hand to share fun facts on the insect world.

Program Schedule – June 20-25,2017

stART (Story + Art)
Tuesday, June 20 and Thursday, June 22  from 11:30 a.m. – noon.
Join us each week as we read childhood classics and introduce new favorites; followed by a take-home, book-inspired craft.
Ages: 3-5.  Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members).

Busy Bug Garden Hats
Tuesday, June 20 through Friday, June 23 from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
Buzz into the museum this month to color and decorate your own buggy garden hat to wear home!
Ages: 3 and up. Free with admission.

Music and Movement
Wednesday, June 21 from 11:30 a.m. – noon
Enjoy creative movement exercises and interactive sing-alongs that get little bodies moving to the rhythm.

Ages: 5 and under. Fee: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members).

Kids in the Kitchen
Friday, June 23 from 11:30 a.m. – noon
Little chefs use real cooking tools (with some help from adults) as we make easy, yummy, kid-friendly snacks from start to finish. As they make their treat, kids gain experience measuring ingredients, following directions and building their vocabulary.   This week we’re making S’mores Popcorn Balls.  (Allergy note: ingredients contain wheat, dairy, and gelatin.)
Ages: 3-5. Fee: $5 with museum admission ($4 LICM members).

Messy Afternoon
Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18  from 3:30-5 p.m.
We’ll be up to our elbows in oobleck, clean mud and slime … and we hope you’ll join us for the type of artistic activities that everyone loves, but not one likes to clean-up after.  Except us!
Ages: 18 months – 4 years. Free with museum admission.

Bug Bonanza!

Sunday, June 25 from 12:30 to 4 p.m.

Join us for a Bug Bonanza at LICM! Discover the amazing lives and natural history of insects, spiders and other creepy crawly creatures. Learn about bug anatomy and fascinating insects that help make up three-quarters of all animals on Earth. Create fun insect crafts, participate in activity challenges and even enjoy a tasty insect-themed treat.

Good Bug/Bad Bug  – LICM Theater

Sunday, June 25 at 1, 2 and 3 p.m.

Find out what makes a bug good or bad, helpful or dangerous from an Arrow Exterminating entomologist.  Explore the fascinating world of various insects including Subterranean Termites, Carpenter Ants, Black Widow Spiders and more. Tickets are limited for this free presentation and can be obtained at the LICM Box Office on a first come, first serve basis.

Traveling Exhibit  – Pattern Wizardry
Through Sunday, September 3
Pattern Wizardry is a wildly whimsical sensory experience presented entirely in rhyme that features four interactive areas, each focusing on a specific type of of pattern: Spiral SpellsTessellation StationBranch, Branch and Linear Lab. The

Kids will don caps as they explore how symmetry in patterns create exciting experiences in Pattern Wizardry

exhibition also features a Wizard Library, a computer pattern station where kids can create their own patterns and Symmetry Sorcery, where children investigate how we use symmetry to organize patterns.

In this bilingual (English/Spanish) exhibit, children are introduced to the fundamentals of patterns as the building blocks of our natural and man-made world. Patterns teach children how to:

Seasonal Exhibit – Our Backyard
Through September 3, 2017

Visit LICM’s award-winning outdoor exhibit; explore the sensory garden and play and experiment with the properties of water as you connect with your inner naturalist. Create summer showers “on demand” using a hand pump and showerhead. Try racing boats down two rills and splash in the streambed. Make evaporation art or take the helm of our weather boat.

All ages. Free with museum admission.

All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City, NY. For the safety of our visitors, Adults are not permitted in the Museum without children; all Museum visitors under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Museum Hours:  Tuesday-Sunday from 10 am.-5 p.m. and most school holidays. Museum admission: $13 for adults and children over 1 year old, $12 seniors, FREE to museum members and children under 1 year old. Additional fees for theater and special programs may apply.
