Philippe Previl
A painter and visual artist born in Brooklyn and raised in Valley Stream, New York. His work confronts black identity and ownership in America, testing what and how viewers see his subjects during this tense climate of race-relations in the country. Philippe’s multi-layered identity as not only a young black man, but also as a Haitian-American weaves themes of class, race, and identification into his work.
Philippe’s work is also deeply personal, portraying friends and family in images untraditionally captured in the medium of fine art and oil painting, examining who and what subjects are worthy of being represented in the traditional European form of portraiture and still life.
Philippe has shown in both group and solo shows in New York, Los Angeles, Richmond, Providence and Boston. He has also been a featured artist in Esquire Magazine as well as Psychology Tomorrow Magazine. Previl Famni, a portrait of the artist’s family, won the People’s Choice award in Heckscher Museum’s Inaugural Long Island Biennial. This past October, his sketchbook won the grand prize at the Temporary Space LA on Miracle Mile in Los Angeles.
Philippe studied at Cooper Union, received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and has participated in two rounds of residencies at the Vermont Studio Center.
Philippe Previl is currently bi-coastal, spending time in both Los Angeles and Valley Stream. He is currently illustrating a children’s book and creating a new body of work for his forthcoming solo show at St. Elmo Village, slated to open Spring of 2016.
