“American Icons: Printmaking” represents the range and depth of American culture, from monuments symbolizing cherished ideals, to playful, popular images; to the darker, even violent side of life. Printmaking is an ideal means of conveying this rich variety. In the past, prints were inexpensive reproductions of images or original artwork, designed to reach a mass audience. In recent years, the definition of what is a print has widened enormously. Many printmakers combine traditional approaches with the new technology that shapes our lives, including digital photography and laser and inkjet printers. By doing this, they have found exciting ways of extending drawing techniques, playing with the mutability of images, and incorporating a variety of media. As a result, twenty-first century printmaking has become almost infinitely flexible, allowed artists to create spontaneously, and opened the way for yet more innovation in art.
