Toxic Garden by Roy Nicholson

Audacity of Abstraction refers to the process wherein the artist  marks the surface, or assembles elements, using materials of choice with the intention of creating a painting, drawing, sculpture – a work of art.  While one does not abstract from nothing and references to reality may be evident, the work is essentially conceptual, intuitive, and non-objective

The artist  alone makes the determination as to whether the result of this process “works” and courageously puts it out into the world for all to see. The viewer may have an immediate or measured response which might affirm or question the aesthetics of this work. This is the “risk” factor, one might say:  the artist has confidence in the finished work, and the viewer who is conversant with abstraction can appreciate or reject  the

work. Shari Abramson‘s paintings have an illusionistic quality, soft edged shapes emerge from ethereal, monochromatic grounds. Gerson Leiber combines strong color in planes into which shapes which often reference nature are painted and drawn. Roy Nicholson is showing paintings from his TOXIC GARDEN series, filling the picture plane with shapes inferring essential nature; he uses the term “re-natured”.  Dan Welden paints bold shapes, most often in muted color.  These could suggest monoliths or mountains captured in space.  Dennis Leri  presents a series of sculpture in welded, painted steel.  The forms are geometric and curvilinear with balance being a

crucial element.
