Participating Artists: Nancy Bueti- Randall, Eve Kousourou, Justine Moody, Odell Plantin, Sally Shore, Fernanda Vargas

Common Threads, an exhibition which features the exceptional work of artists who have adapted age old techniques to express modern concepts of light, color, mass and transparency. In this exhibition, artists utilize fiber to create conceptual pieces that are clearly contemporary in style and spirit.

Butterfly #5, Michael Cummings, 2001, quilt

Michael A. Cummings is a contemporary quilter whose work tells stories of African American history and life from the slave culture to modern stories of achievements and inspiration. For example, one quilt tells the story of the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King. Beth Carney, another contemporary quilter, presents abstract images of color and movement where shapes dance on the surface of beautifully nuanced dyed fabrics. The new work of Fernanda Vargas highlights her adept skill at creating modern designs on fabrics by the ancient Indonesian art of batik, then incorporating them in new projects. Using wax and multicolored dyes, she superimposes layers on fabric to create unique patterns.

Justine Moody and Pat Solan each use felted wool techniques from which they create two and three dimensional works. These pieces have all the attributes of traditional relief and full sculptural presentations. The wool is transformed into felt using the techniques of needle felting and wet felting. Feltis a textile that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibers together.   While some types of felt are very soft, some are tough enough to form construction materials. Felt is widely used as a medium for expression in art as well as design, where it has significance as an ecological textile.

Woven ribbon, wired to hold form, is strategically placed on painted birch panels. Whether grouped together or viewed separately, the presentation of work created by Sally Shore leads us to the edge of the river or pond where we can see the grasses growing in various rambling patterns above the water line.

Eve Kousourou, Refurbished Chair

Eve Kousourou, Refurbished Chair

Eve Kousourou is the one fiber artist in this group who uses the structure of a loom to construct her tapestries, scarves and rugs. Focusing on specific techniques she manipulates cloth through dyeing and creating visual surface texture. Odell Plantin uses Japanese Shibori techniques of stitching, folding, clamping, and pole wrapping before dyeing fabric. Through research and experimentation she creates a variety of scarves and garments.

Two party dresses on display by Marcia Widenor have been hand crocheted of thread made from hand made Japanese paper. Marcia has also created three jewel like paintings made by small squares of golden designs organized on a background of hand made flax paper.

Nancy Bueti-Randall, known for her landscape paintings of energetic surfaces and swirling colors   has continued working with shapes and tones of the garden. But this time in addition to paint, she has expanded her technique using quilted linen and sewing machine techniques to express the various shapes, lines, and abstract details that she finds in all the hidden nooks and crannies that appear in nature.
