Description
March 29 – December 31, 2016
“Southampton Under Siege: The British Occupation of Southampton during the Revolutionary War”
“Southampton Under Siege,” a multimedia exhibit shedding light on the occupation of Southampton during the American Revolution, will open to the public at the Southampton Historical Museum on Saturday, March 19 and remain on view until Saturday, December 31. The exhibit will use a timeline, maps, period rooms, video, and a catalog to bring attention to the men, women, and children who lived in an isolated and occupied village from 1776 until the end of the war.
Following General George Washington’s defeat at the Battle of Long Island, the East End found itself cut off from other, so-called “Patriot” sympathizers who
supported the war with Britain. Confronted with the arrival of British and Hessian military forces, Southampton’s inhabitants were encouraged to flee across the Long Island Sound to Connecticut. Many did, but many did not have the resources to abandon their homes and livelihoods, and stayed in Southampton, where they quartered soldiers in their personal homes, and faced plunder from friend and foe alike.
The public is invited to a free opening reception and curator talk on Saturday, March 19, from 4 to 6 p.m.
The fee after the opening reception will be $4 for non-members, free for members, and children 17 and under.
Maps and other images, as well as physical artifacts will be exhibited to highlight the contrast between the Southampton residents who were unable to make the trip to Connecticut, and the British soldiers who set up camp in their homes. Additionally, a video display will showcase a personal military history, using the journal of Christopher Vail, a Sag Harbor teenager who served in a number of military companies, took part in a whaleboat raid, became a privateer, and was captured and held prisoner in the West Indies for nearly one year.
This exhibit takes place at the Rogers Mansion, a property of the Southampton Historical Museums and Research Center, located at 17 Meeting House Lane in Southampton, NY. The Mansion is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 am to 4 pm. For more information please call .
