Robert S. Neuman’s Ship to Paradise

presented by

Through November 25

Heckscher Museum of Art

This exhibition focuses on the colorful, large-scale, mixed-media drawings in which Robert Neuman addressed the timeless question of human folly.  Reflecting on the modern day world around him and informed by a knowledge of seafaring and shipbuilding, Neuman’s fantastical compositions are a metaphor for the human condition and man’s quest for a better life.  The artist’s exploration of this medieval theme was realized in print as a portfolio of etchings commissioned by August Heckscher, grandson of the Museum’s founder, to accompany a fine facsimile edition of humanist Sebastian Brandt’s best-selling medieval satire Shyp of Fooles.

Absorbed by Color: Art in the 20th Century

presented by

Now  - December 2, 2012

Heckscher Museum of Art

With the tendency towards abstraction in the early 20th century, artists began an exploration of color for its own sake. Freed from the need to replicate the appearance of the natural world, painters examined color’s scientific and physiological attributes and exploited its emotional qualities. Drawn exclusively from the museum’s Permanent Collection, this exhibition presents an overview of color theory and its manifestations in the 20th century, including Pointillism, Fauvism, Synchromism, Neoplasticism, Abstract Expressionism, and Op art. Works by Josef Albers, Richard Anuskiewicz, Oscar Bluemner, Ilya Bolotowsky, James Brooks, Nicolas Carone, James Daugherty, Fritz Glarner, Theodore Stamos, Stanley Twardowicz, and Esteban Vicente, among others, will be featured.
