AB-EX / RE-CON Abstract Expressionism Reconsidered

Blue Triptych
by Fritz Bultman

March 9 – June 16, 2013

Artists of the Abstract Expressionist school rejected the mass cultural values which were being formulated in America at mid-century, searching for alternatives to the consumer and advertising culture prevalent in post-World War II America.

AB-EX / RE-CON explores both the best known and less familiar practitioners of abstract and gestural painting who dominated the American art, criticism and commentary during the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s. Included in the exhibition are works by the stars of Abstract Expressionism, among them Richard Diebenkorn, Helen Frankenthaler, Hans Hofmann, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell and Mark Rothko.AB-EX / RE-CON: Abstract Expressionism Reconsidered also offers viewers the excitement of discovering some of the lesser-known but highly-regarded artists of the movement including Fritz Bultman and Jon Schueler.

Along with this exhibition other events include:

Asad Faulwell / Chris Johanson Exhibition

March 9, 2013 to June 16, 2013

Born in Indiana, now a resident of Los Angeles, Asad Faulwell’s intricate mixed-media art focuses on images of Algerian women, especially the freedom fighters who were involved in the 1954-1962 struggle to end French occupation. They are shown against highly-decorative floral and geometric patterns familiar in Middle Eastern art.

California-born Chris Johanson gained attention in the 2001 Whitney Biennial and has since been widely exhibited in this country and abroad. Johanson employs an exuberant color palette for simple and imperfect geometric shapes. According to Artforum, his “rough-hewn cartoon style” taps the late New Age Northern California style.

Dropkick Murphys

presented by The Paramount in Huntington

Tickets go on sale Friday, March 22 @ 10 AM

Wednesday, June 12, 2013 8:00 PM

Dropkick Murphys formed in 1996 in Boston, MA. The band was originally just a bunch of friends looking to play music for fun. We started playing in the basement of a friend’s barbershop and our goal was to blend the musical influences we had grown up with (Punk Rock, Irish Folk, Rock, and Hardcore) into one loud, raucous, chaotic, and often out of tune mix that we could call our own.

presented by The Paramount in Huntington

Tickets go on sale Friday, March 22 @ 10 AM

Sunday, September 8th, 2013 8:00 PM

On January 18, 2012, The Gaslight Anthem piled into their old tour van and headed across the New Jersey state line for a 14 hour road trip to Nashville on their own quest for the truth. Their destination was 2806 Azalea Place, Nashville, Blackbird Studio, where the New Brunswick quartet had booked five weeks recording time with producer Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, AC/DC). Their mission: to reconnect with rock ‘n’ roll in its most feral, pure, stripped-raw form.

FIVE ELEMENTS: Six Roots Contemplate Origins in the Spoon Fed World

presented by Charles B. Wang Center

Now through May 12, 2013

Reception: April 17, 2013, 1:00 PM

Artist Chee Wang Ng explores multiple images and concepts including the five elements of Chinese cosmology; the beauty and symbolism of porcelain (or “China”); and the notions of care, connection, and abundance represented by the bowl and spoon. This aesthetically striking assemblage of images and objects comes together in an insightful and adventurous exploration of Chinese diasporic identity and experience.

Ng reevaluates, challenges, and recontextualizes traditional Chinese culture in contemporary works that engage elements of ancient allegory, metaphor, and mythology. As seen in this installation, Ng’s signature motif is that of the rice bowl, often with chopsticks or Chinese-style spoons.

Free and open to the public.
