Southampton Cultural Center Presents its First Annual Southampton Jewish Film Festival

Sundays,  July 5 – September 6, 2015 at 7:30 PM

The in partnership with the Southampton Chabad Jewish Center will premiere the first annual to take place this Summer.  The program draws heavily upon archival cinematic works that highlight the rich history of Jewish cinema, and Jewish life in Europe prior to the second World War.  Additionally there will be a broad range of subjects related to the Holocaust and its aftermath.

The festival opens with the Yiddish film “Mamele”  filmed in Poland in 1938, and features  guest artist, June Gable, Broadway and television actress, and star of “Picon Pie”, a tour-de-force production celebrating 80 years of Molly Picon’s life. Other featured films include Orchestra of Exiles, which documents violinist  Bronislaw Huberman’s heroic efforts to rescue Jewish musicians from Hitler, leading to the formation of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra; The Cantor’s Son (1937) starring the great Yiddish matinee idol, Moyshe Oyshe who makes his way from his Polish stetl to New Yorks lower East Side;Being Jewish in France, a sweeping documentary that explores the rich and complex history of Jewish life in France; The Rape of Europa,which tells of the systematic theft, destruction and survival of europes great art treasures during WWII, and for the grand finale, the original 1960 Hollywood blockbuster, Exodus.
