Heckscher Museum of Art
This exhibition focuses on the colorful, large-scale, mixed-media drawings in which Robert Neuman addressed the timeless question of human folly. Reflecting on the modern day world around him and informed by a knowledge of seafaring and shipbuilding, Neuman’s fantastical compositions are a metaphor for the human condition and man’s quest for a better life. The artist’s exploration of this medieval theme was realized in print as a portfolio of etchings commissioned by August Heckscher, grandson of the Museum’s founder, to accompany a fine facsimile edition of humanist Sebastian Brandt’s best-selling medieval satire Shyp of Fooles.

With the tendency towards abstraction in the early 20th century, artists began an exploration of color for its own sake. Freed from the need to replicate the appearance of the natural world, painters examined color’s scientific and physiological attributes and exploited its emotional qualities. Drawn exclusively from the museum’s Permanent Collection, this exhibition presents an overview of color theory and its manifestations in the 20th century, including Pointillism, Fauvism, Synchromism, Neoplasticism, Abstract Expressionism, and Op art. Works by Josef Albers, Richard Anuskiewicz, Oscar Bluemner, Ilya Bolotowsky, James Brooks, Nicolas Carone, James Daugherty, Fritz Glarner, Theodore Stamos, Stanley Twardowicz, and Esteban Vicente, among others, will be featured.

Anything But Silent: Classics with Live Organ Accompaniment
A PAGE OF MADNESS (1926)
This virtuoso Japanese silent film, made in 1926, was lost, then found in 1971. It uses no title-boards, so the story is uninterrupted — an unusual technique in the silent era. Indeed, except for the absence of dialogue, reviewers agree that this classic movie has a very modern look and “feel.” The story of a retired sailor who has taken a job as a janitor in a lunatic asylum to look after his insane wife, A Page of Madness is a stunning invocation of the world as viewed by the mentally ill. Screens with accompaniment by Ben Model on the Cinema’s Miditzer Theater Organ.

Jennifer Warnes is best known for her rich distinctive voice, her exquisite interpretations of the music of significant songwriters, (including Leonard Cohen and James Taylor), her own original songs and for her association with the soundtracks of a number of popular films during the 1970s, ‘80s and ’90s. Her biggest chart-topping hits were “Up Where We Belong” (a duet with Joe Cocker from the 1983 film An Officer and a Gentleman), “I’ve Had The Time of My Life” (a duet with Bill Medley from the 1988 film Dirty Dancing).
